It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that families living in poverty experience every day – the decisions they have to make, and the fears and frustrations they feel. The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a low-income family trying to survive from month to month. It allows participants to look at poverty from a variety of angles and then to recognize and discuss the potential for change within their organizations and community. It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low income people and how it impacts the way they interact with other institutions, agencies, schools, health care facilities and the community at large. As one participant commented, "This poverty simulation dramatically demonstrates how much time and energy many families have to give just to survive from day to day. It quickly dispels the myth "that people would do fine if they would only go out and get a job!" In the simulation, participants assume the roles of different families facing poverty. Some families are newly unemployed, some are single parents, some are homeless, some are working and some are receiving TANF (Temporary Assistance to for Needy Families). Still others are senior citizens receiving Disability or retirement or grandparents raising their grandchildren. The task of the ”families” is to provide for basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute “weeks”. The experience lasts approximately 2 hours. It includes an introduction and briefing, the actual simulation exercise and a debriefing period.
