The importance of the Census
Program of the Month

In three years, the United States Census Bureau will conduct the 23rd United States census in an attempt to count every single man, woman, and child in all 3.8 million square miles of the United States. With so many people and such a large area, it is inevitable that the estimated number will differ from the actual population, but the goal is to get as close as possible to the real number. Unfortunately, some people are missed more frequently than others.

In the 2010 census, it is estimated that the black population was undercounted by 2.1% and the Native American population by almost 5%. At the same time, the census over-counted the white population by 0.8%. This is important because under- and over-counting artificially enhances the importance and resources of one population and diminishes that of another. How many congressional representatives a state receives is directly linked to the population at the time of the census, and the distribution of public funds for a number of projects and programs are linked to this as well.

Therefore, an under-count of a population in a certain area can lead to a lack of representation or funding. Improvements are continually being made, but you can help by ensuring that you accurately fill out your census form when it arrives, and even by helping community agencies work with individuals that may be easily missed to ensure that they are given recognition.

August is the new September! In many areas across the nation, children are getting ready to go back to school. In fact, August is Back to School Safety Month. Head Start and Early Head Start is also busy getting ready for the new program year.

Head Start and Early Head Start enhance the development of low-income children 0-5 in supportive partnership with their families and in collaboration with the community through the delivery of education, health, nutrition, mental health and social services. Programs are available in Hunterdon, Morris, Sussex and Warren Counties. Early Head Start center-based is the newest addition.

NORWESCAP received funds to extend services in Morris County and expand services in Hunterdon, Morris and Warren Counties. This expansion will provide center-based care to an additional 64 children! August is National Immunization Awareness Month and Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. Our health services recognize this and ensure children have medical and dental homes. We will institute a new evidence-based pregnancy curriculum. The birth-five approach provides a continuum of care.

Supporting school readiness is an ongoing partnership between staff and families. Families play a critical role in helping their children be ready for school and for a lifetime of academic success. Parents interested in participating in the Head Start and Early Head Start program can call 908-454-8830.
